This year, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Community launched its newest initiative, Red Kalyna (red viburnum berries) that aims to recognize and promote outstanding Ukrainian female entrepreneurs, educators and mentors. The focus is on those who have either developed innovative products or solutions or transformed their businesses into innovative ventures.
Thirty Ukrainian women were nominated for this year’s call, out of which nine remarkable individuals were shortlisted as finalists.
Among the finalists in the lineup of the best female innovators is Inna Maliukova, co-founder and head of the Sikorsky Challenge Ukraine Innovation Ecosystem at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. Sikorsky Challenge Ukraine’s mission is to help stakeholders solve complex problems by providing startups and solutions that reduce the time from new ideas to life-changing inventions.
Historically, red kalyna, a deciduous shrub that grows four to five meters tall, is the most important plant in Ukrainian culture. It has become a powerful symbol of resistance against foreign dominance and political oppression, deeply rooted in the hearts of Ukrainians.
Frequently featured in Ukrainian folklore, embroidered onto Ukrainian national dress, and even adopted as insignia for Ukraine’s Armed Forces, red kalyna embodies the spirit of resilience and determination. Its symbolic representation aligns with the initiative’s goal of celebrating and supporting Ukrainian women who are at the forefront of innovation and education.
