U.N. General Assembly requires Russia to pay war reparations to Ukraine

In a 94-14 vote, the 193-member United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution calling for Russia to be held accountable for its heinous invasion of Ukraine. It was drafted by Ukraine in co-authorship with more than 50 countries.

The resolution reaffirms Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, demanding from the Russian terrorist state to withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. Furthermore, the General Assembly recognizes that Russia must be held accountable for violations of international law, particularly its abhorrent aggression against Ukraine. As the aggressor, Russia “must bear the legal consequences of all of its internationally wrongful acts, including making reparation for the injury, including any damage, caused by such acts”, the resolution reads.

Specifically, 94 member states voted for the resolution, 73 abstained and 14, including China and Iran, voted against.
