Expanded impact rankings reflect rising interest in SDGs

A record 1,524 institutions from 110 countries or regions have participated in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings this year, a 23% increase since last year, reflecting the growing importance universities are attaching to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) globally.

The THE Impact Rankings 2022 ranked universities on their work towards the SDGs in 18 tables – an overall ranking and one for each of the 17 SDGs. To appear in the overall ranking table, universities must have submitted to SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals) and a minimum of three other SDGs.

Overall, there are 26 ranked Ukrainian institutions compared with 15 last year. The Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI) improved its global ranking in SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy), reaching the 201-300 band. This is the strong result demonstrating that KPI is highly competitive globally. However, KPI is not particularly strongly represented in SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) yet.

In Ukraine specifically, KPI is second for SDG 7; fifth for SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), SDG 14 (life below water); and 11th for SDG 16.

These results need to be viewed in the context of a rising number of ranked institutions globally, up from 1,118 in 2021 to 1,406 in 2022, indicating greater competition globally and that more institutions are embracing these rankings. It is worth noting too that the bulk of Ukrainian institutions are in the lower reaches of the rankings, most notably the 1001+ range.
