EIB announces €13M to renovate Ukrainian universities

The European Investment Bank (EIB), as part of its Ukraine Solidarity Urgent Response package, is directing a €10 million EU-guaranteed loan toward transforming university campuses across the nation.

Sixteen institutions in cities such as Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, and Odesa will benefit from energy-efficient renovations, encompassing advanced insulation, modern heating systems, and improved accessibility. This initiative seeks to create safer, more sustainable environments while significantly reducing energy consumption and operational costs.

Complementing this effort, a €10 million grant from the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) Fund is accelerating these upgrades, with €3.25 million already allocated to initiate further construction projects. This partnership underscores the collective commitment of international donors, including the EU, to modernising Ukraine’s education sector even amid the ongoing sinister war against the terrorist state that goes under the name of russia. By early 2025, all six universities benefiting from the E5P grant are expected to have renovation work underway, marking a milestone in the nation’s recovery and long-term sustainability.

EIB Vice-President Teresa Czerwińska described the project as an investment in Ukraine’s future, highlighting its role in fostering resilience and human capital development. Rémi Duflot, Chargé d’Affaires of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, praised the collaboration between the EIB, EU, and E5P, emphasizing how these initiatives bring immediate relief while laying a foundation for enduring growth. Together, these efforts transform Ukrainian universities into modern, energy-efficient campuses, offering hope and stability at this challenging time of the heinous russian invasion of Ukraine.
