Assisting Ukrainian academics, students is the priority

At its meeting on 11-12 April, the Bologna Follow-Up Group (BFUG) decided to suspend Russia and Belarus’s right to representation in view of the role both countries are playing in the war against Ukraine. This suspension follows decisions to exclude or suspend Russia from a large range of intergovernmental cooperation structures, including the Council of Europe.

The BFUG adopted a statement that also calls for higher education assistance to be given to Ukraine and, by the time of the meeting, more than two thirds of the members of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and all but two of its consultative members had signed up to it.

The suspension also follows a statement by the Russian Union of Rectors expressing strong support for Russia’s war against Ukraine. As there has been no subsequent statement to the contrary, this must be read to include support for the war crimes committed in Mariupol, Bucha, Borodyanka, Kramatorsk and other Ukrainian cities and villages.
