Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), visited the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI) on the occasion of the anniversary of the tragic disaster that had happened at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on April 26, 1986.
During a meeting with University’s administration Mr. Grossi delivered an online lecture to KPI students who had an opportunity to ask him questions and learn about everything that they were interested in. Among the participants were mainly students majoring in the master’s program “Physical Protection, Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials.” The students acquired a very important experience since the lecture was aimed at disseminating information about the career opportunities of graduates.
In addition, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute took the initiative in organizing a master’s program to train specialists in decommissioning nuclear power plants. This is a very significant area of research today because the rates of development of nuclear technologies require the diligent disposal of disused facilities. It is important to note that a part of radioactive materials still remains in the neglected territory of Ukraine, where the above specialists may well put their own knowledge into practice for the good of society.
IAEA works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.
