Each of us uses more than 100 kilograms of plastic a year. A large portion is not recycled but it pollutes the environment. In 30 years the amount of garbage in the ocean may well exceed the number of sea creatures.
Fortunately, we have a team that conceived the brilliant idea of using artificial intelligence in trash detection and removal. In addition, the team is composed of women who studied at the University of Technology-Politechnika Gdańska, Politechnika Wrocławska, University of Technology Warsaw (PW po godzinach) and Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza w Krakowie.
Specifically, the Detective Waste team includes Agnieszka Mikołajczyk, Sylwia Majchrowska, Marysia Ferlin, Marta Agata Plantykow, Zuzanna Klawikowska, Magdalena Kortaa, Ewa EM Marczewska, Anna Brodecka, Katarzyna Łagocka.
The ladies involved in the Detect Waste project have developed an artificial intelligence algorithm for detection of waste (mainly plastic) in the natural environment. The algorithm will be a pilot solution capable of improving automated garbage recycling, monitoring the environment (automatic search for illegal garbage disposal and automated measurement of environmental pollution) and even minimizing the costs of keeping a city clean.
Anyone can join and support the project. Just take a photo of plastic or other waste in the environment (on the beach, in the forest, in the sea, in a city), send a photo via the special form and describe it. A larger number of photos enables the creation of a more precise algorithm, which can contribute to a drive for a clean environment in the future, including the Baltic Sea.
Congratulations to the ladies! Please register for the event Future 2021 scheduled for April 22 that will give you an opportunity to discover your course of study. Maybe you will find a way to work against pollution of the planet. It would be very worthwhile going to the University of Technology.
