In Zagreb and Warsaw, Kyiv Polytechnic Lyceum students win gold and silver medals for their projects

Each year, high-school graduates – participants and winners of national and international competitions – join the student community of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. Among the most active participants in competitions are students of the Polytechnic Lyceum under the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

INOVA 2024, the 48th International Invention Show, took place in Zagreb, Croatia, on October 16-19, 2024. Running since 1971, this exhibition of inventions and innovations of young people annually hosts inventors from Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, and the Americas. This year, INOVA brought together about 500 participants from 20 countries. Among them was a delegation of 31 Ukrainian inventors.

Sofiia Stoliar (pictured left), 11th grade student at the Polytechnic Lyceum, won a gold medal for her project “Development of Smart System for Automating the Monitoring of Kyiv Transportation System Using AI.” She was guided in her work by Ivan Komarov, computer science teacher, and Stanislava Ihnatova, head of the Department of Engineering and Materials Science at the Kyiv Junior Academy of Sciences.

This victory follows a tradition of excellence established by the Lyceum. Notable past achievements of the lyceum students, who are now students of Kyiv Polytechnic, include Andriі Mavrin’s gold medal earned at INOVA 2023, gold medals awarded to Andrii Mavrin, Anastasiia Kurulenko, Mykhailo Mutskyi and Ihor Klymenko at INOVA 2022, and Sofiia Pavlova’s gold medal at INOVA 2021 for her virtual-reality laboratory project designed for environmental monitoring.

Meanwhile, the International Warsaw Invention Show (IWIS) took place in the Polish capital on October 14-16, 2024. The event was attended by representatives from many countries in Europe, Americas, Africa and Asia, who showcased some 300 inventions.

Ukraine was represented by the team of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which included nine young scientists. The team won three gold, two silver, four bronze medals and five special awards.

Among them, Arina Khmeliuk (pictured right), another 11th grade student from the Polytechnic Lyceum, received a silver medal and a special prize from the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations. Previously, her project “Improving Waste Sorting Process through Neural Networks” took first place at the nationwide competition held by the Junior Academy of Sciences. In addition, Arina Khmeliuk completed the BizCamp three-week educational online program this summer. She also excelled as a finalist in the regional round of the World Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge in September.

Her success builds upon a legacy of triumphs by the lyceum students, who won medals in previous years and then have become students of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and continue their inventive activities. Notable past winners include Stanislav Skorobohatov and Volodymyr Karan, who won gold medals, and Varvara Babych, who won a silver medal, at IWIS 2020, as well as Andrii Mavrin and Mykhailo Mutskyi, who got gold and silver medals, respectively, at IWIS 2022.

“Our students have once again demonstrated their great capabilities on the international arena,” the Polytechnic Lyceum administration stated. “Competing among hundreds of projects from around the world, they have achieved brilliant victories. We are proud that our students keep up the best traditions of the lyceum – victories in international competitions and closer involvement in the global research area.”
