In 2023, a comprehensive monitoring of drinking water quality across Ukraine was conducted at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, supported by WaterNet, the first All-Ukrainian professional public organization of specialists on water treatment.
The purpose of the project is to collect reliable data on the quality of drinking water, identify regional variations in its composition and pollution levels, and provide recommendations with respect to improving the condition of water resources.
The initiative was undertaken through the joint efforts of the laboratory of ion exchange and adsorption within the Kyiv Polytechnic’s Department of Technology of Inorganic Substances, Water Treatment and General Chemical Technology (TISWT and GCT), WaterNet, the TISWT and GCT Department itself, and the Innovative Water Technologies Center. This joint research was carried out under three contracts of a water quality analysis:
1. A contract dated December 1, 2022, between the laboratory of ion exchange and adsorption at the Kyiv Polytechnic’s Faculty of Chemical Technology and WaterNet, valid from January 2, 2023 to December 31, 2023, under the direction of Tetiana Mitchenko.
2. A contract of an analytical investigation into water samples, dated April 24, 2023, between the TISWT and GCT Department and WaterNet, valid from May 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024, led by Tetiana Dontsova and executed by Hryhorii Krymets.
3. A contract dated November 30, 2023, between the Innovative Water Technologies Center at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and WaterNet, valid from November 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024, led by Iryna Kosogina.
Within the framework of this project, more than 2,000 water samples were collected from various Ukrainian regions to study their composition and assess compliance with safety standards for consumption. These samples were analyzed for physicochemical and biological parameters, particularly for heavy metals, microorganisms, pH, hardness, chlorides, nitrates, and other pollutants.
