Kyiv Polytechnic maintains ninth place as Ukraine’s top 10 university

In the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, Europe’s representation remains significant, with 684 institutions ranked, making it the second most-represented continent after Asia.

Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has been placed in band 1501+ out of 2,092 universities in the 2025 rankings, maintaining ninth place as Ukraine’s top 10 university. The institution’s highest-performing pillar was “Teaching.” Despite this modest overall ranking, the university’s inclusion in the rankings highlights its ongoing efforts in a highly competitive global education landscape, where performance is measured across key indicators such as research, internationalization, and industry collaboration.

Kyiv Polytechnic’s performance reflects the broader challenges faced by many European universities, particularly those outside the Western European core, where institutions are increasingly pressured by limited resources and fierce global competition. The data from the rankings indicate areas for improvement, especially in international collaborations and research impact, to enhance their global standing. This performance offers a clear roadmap for future development as Kyiv Polytechnic strives to strengthen its presence in the international academic arena in spite of russia’s heinous aggression that decimated Ukraine’s scientific intellectual community. Over 33% of the country’s pre-war scientists are either no longer in Ukraine or have stopped practicing science, according to an academic study, “The effects of war on Ukrainian research.”

Europe has seen a decrease in its elite representation, now holding 91 of the top 200 universities, an 8% drop from 2019. Western Europe leads the region’s rankings, with Germany, the UK, and Italy showing strong performances in research quality. In another improved performance, Poland had 40 higher education institutions ranked, up from 37 last year. Despite this, there is growing competition from Asian institutions, especially from China, challenging Europe’s hold on the upper tiers of global rankings.
