KPI’s overall score improves in World Rankings, driven by dramatic improvements in research publication citations

Reportedly, 1,799 institutions from 104 countries or regions have participated in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings draw on an analysis of 15.5 million research publications and 121 million citations to those publications, plus over 40,000 responses to an annual academic reputation survey and hundreds of thousands of additional data points covering a university’s teaching environment, international outlook and industry links.

Institutions are measured across 13 separate performance metrics.

Ukraine has 10 universities in the THE World University Rankings 2023 with the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI) being one of the country’s best-performing institutions, ranked in the 1201-1500 band (retaining sixth position in the region). KPI’s overall score has improved from 10.6-22.3 a year ago to 18.4-24.3, driven by dramatic improvements in research reputation and research publication citations. Overall, the picture remains relatively healthy for KPI, thanks in part to healthy levels of strong international collaboration, particularly with the University of Sheffield and the Poznan University of Technology.

In addition, 18 Ukraine’s universities are listed with “reporter” status, meaning that they provided data but did not meet THE eligibility criteria to receive a rank, and agreed to be displayed as a reporter in the final table.

It is worth noting too that Central and Eastern Europe gain ground as Hungary and Estonia enter the world top 250, and Poland improves its representation with nine new entries into the rankings.

Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer at Times Higher Education, said: “Europe is of course a thriving powerhouse of world-class higher education and research, but a significant shift in the balance of power in the knowledge economy has taken place, with Asian universities now outnumbering those from Europe in the overall THE World University Rankings.”
